Manoa Falls
Manoa Falls feels like a hidden gem of Oahu even though it’s easily walkable and just a few miles from the city center. It’s a short hike with a huge payoff. Lush greenery, exotic animals, and a gorgeous waterfall are all present on this must-see trail just outside of Waikiki.
How to Get to Manoa Falls
You can take the #5 Manoa Route bus, but if you have a rental car, it’s easiest to drive yourself. From Waikiki, you’ll want to take Kalakaua Avenue to Punahou Street and follow it inland as it turns into Manoa Road. It’s only a few miles of driving, but expect it to take about 20 minutes as you go through a residential area. There’s a $5 parking fee at the lot by the Manoa Falls trailhead, or you can street park for free in the neighborhood and walk about a quarter-mile to the trail.
Hike With Confidence
The best time of day to visit Manoa Falls is before 9 am, partly to beat the crowds and partly because you’ll get to see how it looks in the morning mist. Manoa Falls is a low-grade hike with an 800 ft elevation change over about three-quarters of a mile. Even if you walk slowly and pause to take pictures, it will take less than an hour to reach the falls. Quick walkers can probably get there in 20 minutes. This is a perfect casual hike for families and beginners!
Footwear
The trail is fairly well-traveled and easily recognizable, so hiking boots are not necessary. Sneakers or strap-on sandals will work fine. You should consider wearing footwear with decent grip because the trail is often slippery due to the high rainfall in Manoa.
Food & Drink
Because Manoa Falls is such a short hike, you don’t need to worry too much about bringing loads of provisions. Travel light with a water bottle and a snack, then head back into the city for lunch. There is a shop at the base of the trailhead with some simple items, but you’ll likely overpay.
Insects
People aren’t the only ones who know how to get to Manoa Falls. Bug spray is a must!
Swimming
Swimming is not allowed in the pool below the falls—despite what you may see some tourists do! We recommend staying out of the water for your safety, both to avoid bacteria and injury.
Parking
Trail parking at Manoa Falls fills up quickly, especially at peak season. Finding a decent spot is another reason to go before 9 am—or you may end up walking farther to the trailhead than the length of the trail itself.
