Hawaiʻi Car Rentals: GoVibe Welcomes Travelers from Japan!
Each year, 1.5 million people come to Hawaiʻi from Japan. We welcome our Pacific neighbors with the Aloha Spirit. You will find that many signs are in Japanese, and many staff in sightseeing areas speak Japanese.
Our islands are full of natural beauty. From mountains to volcanic craters to the gorgeous clear blue waters, Hawaiian scenery is some of the most breathtaking in the world.
The best way to get around the island is by car. Go Vibe makes renting a car in Hawaiʻi easy—you can book online from Japan!
How to Rent a Car in Hawaiʻi When Coming From Japan
Unfortunately, you cannot use your Japanese driver’s license in Hawaiʻi. You need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Japan before you travel. You cannot get an IDP in the United States.
Getting an IDP is very easy. You can apply at the driver’s license center in your prefecture.
The fee is 2,350 yen, and it takes about an hour to process. When you apply, be sure to bring:
- Your valid Japanese driver’s license (for the duration of your trip)
- A 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo (you can usually take this at a photo machine)
- Your passport and airline ticket
Your IDP is good for one year. When you rent a car in Hawaiʻi or use your IDP, you must have your Japanese driver’s license with you. It’s a good idea to keep the two together when you are packing so you don’t forget it! Also, remember that you must be 25 years old or older to rent a car in Hawaiʻi.

Dole Plantation - Over 1 million people visit the Dole Plantation every year. You can ride the plantation train, explore the garden maze, and buy local souvenirs at the shop. You can also see their webpage in Japanese for more information.
Moanalua Gardens - Located near Honolulu, this is where you can see the famous Hitachi Tree! Due to COVID-19, the gardens are currently only open to private events reserved in advance, so be sure to check their website for the latest updates.
The Royal Hawaiian Center or Luxury Row - Shop until you drop at Honolulu’s luxury boutiques and high-end stores in Waikiki. Treat yourself to a souvenir of Hawaiʻi you’ll never forget.
