Pearl Harbor
Oahu is full of rich culture, and many history buffs are thrilled to learn Pearl Harbor is not far from Honolulu. Making the trip to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is a must for World War II enthusiasts. It’s a somber memorial to the more than two thousand Americans who lost their lives on December 7, 1941, as well as a testament to the strength and courage of those who have sacrificed to keep our nation safe.
What to Expect
From parking at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to figuring out snacks for the day, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind if you plan on adding this stop to your trip itinerary.
Reservations
The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and National Memorial are free to the public. They do not require reservations or tickets. If you want to tour the USS Arizona or partake in the Ford Island bus tour, you’ll want to make reservations prior to arrival because those spots fill up quickly.
Transportation & Parking
How far is Pearl Harbor from Honolulu? Like most things on Oahu, the memorial is close to the airport. It’s about ten to fifteen minutes north on HI-99, and there is free parking for your rental car at Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. There are also free shuttles that bring you to Ford Island for a more in-depth tour.
Food & Drink
Pearl Harbor has a no-bag policy, so don’t count on a backpack for carrying snacks. If you bring water or food, be prepared to carry it with you throughout your visit. There is also a store on the grounds with food and water.
Dress Code
It’s important to remember that Pearl Harbor is a resting place for hundreds of soldiers and is a site that represents tremendous sacrifice. You’ll see many active-duty soldiers and veterans in military dress, and it is recommended that visitors dress appropriately in respectful attire and no swimwear. Footwear is important too because you’ll be on your feet, so we recommend comfortable shoes.
